Textual Variants, Reformation Bibles & King James

I present cases, which contain specific verses and/or words that are missing in many modern English versions of the Holy Bible, but that can be found in the English translations produced before the King James Bible.

 

Matt. 5:22

 

“but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.” Authorized King James Version (AV)

 

“But I say vnto you, that who so euer is angry with his brother, vnaduisedly, shalbe in daunger of iudgement. And who so euer shall say vnto his brother, racha, shalbe in daunger of a councell: But, whosoeuer shall saye (thou) foole, shalbe in daunger of hell fire.” Bishops Bible 1568 (BB)  

 

“But I say vnto you: that whosoeuer is angrye with hys brother (vnaduysedly) shalbe in daunger of iudgement. And whosoeuer saye vnto hys brother Racha, shalbe in daunger of a councell. But whosoeuer sayeth thou foole, shalbe in daunger of hell fyre.” The Great Bible 1539 (GB)

 

“But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother unadvisedly, shall be culpable of judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca’, shall be worthy to be punished by the Council. Luke 9:55-56

 

But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.” AV

 

“Iesus turned about, & rebuked them, saying: Ye wote not what maner spirite ye are of. For the sonne of man is not come to destroye mens lyues, but to saue them. And they went to another towne.BB

 

“Neuertheles Iesus turned him aboute, and rebuked them, and sayde: Knowe ye not, what maner of sprete ye are of? The sonne of man is not come to destroye mens soules, but to saue them. And they wente in to another towne.” CB

 

“And turning, he rebuked them, saying: You know not of what spirit you are. The Son of man came not to destroy souls, but to save. And they went into another town.” Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

John 3:13

 

“And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.” AV

 

And no man ascendeth vp to heauen, but he that came downe from heauen, euen the sonne of man which is in heauen.” BB

 

And no man ascendeth vp in to heauen, but he that is come downe from heaue, (namely) the sonne of man which is in heauen.” CB

 

And no man ascendeth vp to heauen, but he that came doune from heauen, euen the sonne of man whych is in heauen:” GB

 

“And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.” DRA

John 7:8

 

“Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.” AV

 

“Go ye vp vnto this feast: I wyll not go vp yet vnto this feast, for my tyme is not yet full come.” BB

 

“Go ye vp vnto this feast, I wyll not go vp yet vnto this feast, for my tyme is not yet fulfylled.” Coverdale Bible 1538 (CB)

 

“Go ye vp vnto this feast, I will not go vp yet vnto this feast, for my tyme is not yet full come.” GB

 

“You go up to this feast. I will not go up yet to this feast, for my time is not yet full come.” New Matthew Bible (NMB)

 

“You go up to the feast. I will not go up to this feast yet. For My time is not yet fulfilled.” RGT

 

“Go ye vp vnto this feast. I will not go vp yet vnto this feast for my tyme is not yet full come.” TB

 

1 Cor. 15:47(1)

 

“The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.” AV

 

“The first man [is] of the earth, earthy: the seconde man [is] the Lorde from heauen.” BB

 

“The fyrst man is of the erth, erthy: the seconde man is the Lorde from heauen” GB

 

“The first man is of the earth, earthly. And the second man is the Lord from heaven.” NMB

 

“The first man is of the Earth, earthly. The second Man is the Lord from Heaven.” RGT

 

“The fyrst ma is of the erth erthy: the seconde man is ye Lorde fro heave.” TB

 

Rev. 1:11

 

“saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.” AV

 

“Saying: I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: That thou seest, write in a booke, and sende it vnto the seuen Churches which are in Asia, vnto Ephesus, and vnto Smyrna, and vnto Pergamos, and vnto Thyatira, and vnto Sardis, and vnto Philadelphia, and vnto Laodicea.” BB
