More on Islamic Female Circumcision

Female circumcision (more correctly, female genital mutilation) is a part of Islamic teaching, as the following Muslim source confirms:

Malik said: It is not recommended, but leaving it is not forbidden, and there is nothing wrong with it.

Chapter on Circumcision

They agreed that circumcision for men and female genital cutting are permissible.

Then they differed regarding its obligation.

Abu Hanifa and Malik said: It is a Sunnah in her case, and it is not an obligatory duty, but those who abandon it are sinful.

Al-Shafi’i said: It is obligatory for both males and females.

Ahmad said: It is obligatory for men, to narrate one hadith.
